Strategies on how to get parents supporting each other and learning from each other in an engaging, conversational environment. Learn how to unlock the power of parent-to-parent connections, helping them find the supportive relationships they lack and discovering the gifts they have to give each other.
Learn how to get the whole church on board with a family-friendly focus—implementing and celebrating things that impact everyone in the church, not just those participating in family ministry (children’s/youth). If parents are the most important people in the pews, how do we reverse engineer from this truth to change our church culture?
12:00–1:00 pm Lunch

Afternoon Session

1:30-3:00 pm Breakout Session 2

Embedded in Dr. Christian Smith’s groundbreaking book Handing Down the Faith is a compelling research finding—homes that tend to influence a lifelong faith in their kids have an engaged father who has an authentic faith and is naturally and intentionally influencing his kids. We also know fathers, in general, are less engaged in church. So, if dads are a key to kids embracing an authentic faith, what can ministry leaders do to engage them more deeply?

In our four-year project we discovered that our innovative listening strategies had tremendous traction among parents and ministry leaders. Learn how to plan, implement, and spread listening strategies throughout your church—discover the power of listening as a magnet for families. And learn how to honor what you hear by creating ministry “responses” for parents.
When people tell their stories, it’s like adding threads of relational “connective tissue” in your congregation. Storytelling is the key to building community, and is a portal into a deeper relationship with God. Learn how to plant storytelling strategies in diverse ways among your parents.
3:15-4:45 pm Breakout Session 3
Learn strategic insights and practices for moving your church toward a home-centered, church-supported focus. Learn how to introduce new structures and ideas, and how to influence your church culture toward a more family-friendly mindset.

We’ve learned that even great parent-friendly ideas die when they’re not embedded in the rhythms of everyday life. Parents want to impact their kids’ faith, but the church often asks them to do things that seem difficult, foreign, or confusing to them. Here’s how to “drop” digital ideas and resources into the everyday patterns of parenting, inviting parents to do things that are do-able.

Nothing is more important in parents’ influence on their kids’ faith than a deepening, everyday relationship with God. Learn from our experiments in “The Presence Project”—how to simply, profoundly invite parents to increase their capacity to be present to God, and to one another. When parents are growing, and changing the way they engage their kids, fruit happens.

8:10–8:28 pm Panel Discussion: The Best Ways to Attract Parent Participation

Friday, May 1

8:00-9:00 am Breakfast

Morning Session

9:00-10:30 am Breakout Session 4
Sometimes our approach to parent-equipping and family ministry are bulky, difficult to pull off, and complex. Here’s how to clarify and simplify a ministry approach that unleashes everyone into a magnetic, life-giving experience. Focus on small wins in your church to build momentum toward a home-centered, church-supported approach.
Learn how to get past the fear of losing parents and families in your church—experience an “engine” of thriving that will drive growth and community. And learn how a 4th-Soil Parenting approach can be a magnet of interest in your wider community.
Most church leaders bemoan “we can’t get people to come to one more thing.” What can you do if you’re stuck in the structures and habits and patterns of ministry the way you’ve always done it? It’s time to break out of our rut and pursue do-able innovations.

I’m also the devoted daughter of my incredible, aging mom, Billie. My fun hat: I’m a storyteller, public speaker, workshop leader, and the voice behind storyboardingchurch.com—where I write about the sacred art of story and community. My work hat: I serve as Pastor of Family Ministry at Bethlehem Lutheran Church – Twin Cities in Minneapolis, where I get to live out my passion for connecting people across generations through faith and storytelling. Life is rich, wild, and full of grace—and I’m here for all of it.
