Adults: Faith Formation with Midlife Adults

Teacher: Janet Schaeffler, OP

The Faith Formation for Midlife Adults MasterClass addresses the central period of a person’s life, spanning from approximately age 40 to age 60. People describe it in different ways. First it is a time of tremendous opportunity and growth. Mid-lifers have amassed a great deal of wisdom and perspective that can be tapped to turn transitions and challenges into opportunities, growth, and deeper life satisfaction. Second, it is an ambiguous time characterized by a deeper search for meaning and a renewal of commitments. It can be a stressful time, as many people come to feel discontented and restless as they struggle with aging, mortality, and holding onto a sense of purpose. The question for church leaders is: Do our adult faith formation efforts, programs and processes respond to the varied needs of this time of life? This MasterClass helps leaders develop an understanding of the various (and sometimes differing) characteristics and needs of midlife adults and explore practical ideas and possible strategies for creatively engaging midlife adults.

Sister Janet Schaeffler is an Adrian Dominican Sister who has worked in parish and diocesan ministry in faith formation. She is currently ministering as an adult faith formation consultant and presenter. The author of hundreds of articles and several publications in catechetical and parish ministry, her articles can be found in Today’s Parish and Religion Teacher’s Journal as well as several other parish ministerial publications. She teaches online courses through Boston College and the University of Dayton. One of her most recent books is Deepening Faith: Adult Faith Formation in the Parish (Liturgical Press, 2016). Janet created and publishes GEMS – a monthly newsletter flowing from an ongoing international adult faith formation best practices study (www.janetschaeffler.com).

Culture: Courage to Connect across Cultures

Teachers: Joe Davis and Rev. Erik Samuelson

The Courage to Connect across Cultures MasterClass equips leaders to engage and celebrate diversity, a central commitment of the Christian movement—from Israel’s embrace of the stranger, to Jesus call to love our neighbor, to Paul’s proclamation that in Christ we are “one body, with many members,” to the multi-cultural nature of the early Church. Leaders often struggle to put these theological commitments into practice. In an increasingly polarized world, courageous Christian communities long to connect across cultural differences, but often don’t know where to begin. Whether your congregation is just starting to engage conversations across cultures, hoping to celebrate the diversity in your community, or looking to deepen engagement in your multi-cultural setting, this MasterClass will be a valuable learning experience. By engaging a framework for cultural competencies with a developmental lens, participants will get a sense for how their lived experience impacts how they engage in relationships across cultures. Leaders will identify their “intercultural orientation” as a leader and as a congregation, develop practices to build their intercultural competency, and explore practical ways they can build their capacity for intercultural conversation and community.

Joe Davis is a nationally-touring artist, educator, and speaker based in Minneapolis, MN. His work employs poetry, music, theater, and dance to shape culture. He has keynoted, facilitated conversation, led anti-racism and intercultural development trainings, and served as teaching artist at hundreds of congregations, high schools, and universities across the country. Joe holds a Masters in Theology of the Arts from Luther Seminary, is a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory, and consults with congregations and judicatories looking to deepen their cultural competency. (joedavispoetry.com)

Rev. Erik Samuelson is a leadership coach, educator, and ELCA pastor who lives north of Seattle, WA. Through his work with multi-cultural congregations and communities he has come to appreciate the power of story to open us up to our common struggles and the value of using our diverse strengths for the common good. He leads trainings and retreats in faith-based community organizing, spiritual practices, vocational discernment, and adaptive leadership.  He holds a Masters of Divinity from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, a Masters of Arts in Systematic and Philosophical Theology from the Graduate Theological Union, and is a Professional Certified Coach in-training under the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Erik coaches leaders and congregations through Vibrant Faith and is a member of the Vibrant Faith Coaching School faculty. (eriksamuelson.com)
