What is a Vibrant Faith MasterClass?

A Vibrant Faith MasterClass is a focused look at one aspect of lifelong faith formation, presented by an expert teacher, that incorporates both the Why? and How? of the subject. Our goal is to enhance your knowledge, skills, and confidence for leading faith formation that transforms people and communities.

Each Vibrant Faith MasterClass is taught by a nationally recognized leader in Christian faith formation who is an experienced educator, author, consultant, and program designer.

What does a MasterClass include?

Each Vibrant Faith MasterClass includes:
Two 90-minute sessions with live presentations by the MasterClass teacher followed by discussion and ideas to guide application to your church
Resources for your ministry including articles, tools, and resources on Vibrant Faith Catalyst to apply the MasterClass to your setting

How much does a MasterClass cost?

The tuition is $60 per MasterClass. All registrations are on Eventbrite. See details below on our Fall 2020 MasterClass Season Pass for a discounted price for your entire team for MasterClasses offered from August-December of 2020.

What do I need to participate?

Each MasterClass is offered online with recordings and resources provided at Vibrant Faith Catalyst. You can join Catalyst (free) and enroll in your MasterClass (registration links below). Joining Catalyst will allow you to access the resources provided in the MasterClass. You will need access to high-speed internet and a computer, laptop, or tablet with audio and a video camera for the two online sessions. Recordings of the live sessions will be made available to registered participants.

Teacher: Dr. Tanya Eustace Campen

The Children’s Faith Formation MasterClass will engage you in re-envisioning faith formation with children (0-10 years old) and parents that puts the primary emphasis on their lives and needs today, and how to best nurture their grow in faith and discipleship. The MasterClass explores the unique life tasks, needs, interests, and spiritual journeys of children today (first decade of life), and presents a holistic approach to faith formation with children by incorporating intergenerational, family, and age group experiences. The MasterClass presents practices and strategies for designing faith formation in today’s world that reinvents current programming and develops new and innovative approaches to children’s faith formation.

Rev. Dr. Tanya Marie Eustace Campen is an ordained deacon in the Rio Texas Conference and currently serves as Director of Intergenerational Discipleship for the Rio Texas Conference Office. She has a Masters of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Doctorate in Christian education and congregational studies from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. Her research focus is children’s spirituality. She has more than 20 years of experience as a Christian educator, youth director, and minister to children and families in the local church. She regularly teaches faith formation courses, webinars, and workshops for ministry leaders.

The Adolescent Faith Formation MasterClass will engage you in re-envisioning faith formation with young people that puts the primary emphasis on their lives and needs today, and how to best nurture their grow in faith and discipleship. Rev. Michael Droege has been in youth and family ministry for 30 years. Along with his coaching work with Vibrant Faith, Michael currently serves as Associate Pastor of Wilson Memorial Church in Watchung, NJ, as an adjunct professor at Drew Theological School (Drew University), and is a frequent workshop and conference speaker with two decades of experience training and coaching leaders.

Teacher: Denise Utter

The Family Faith Formation MasterClass explores the world of today’s families and their unique life tasks and spiritual-religious needs. The family is the primary community where faith practices are nurtured and practiced. The MasterClass presents the central role of families in faith transmission, and the practices that are most significant in forming faith in children and teens. The MasterClass presents approaches and strategies for forming faith at home (celebrating rituals and milestones, praying, serving, learning the Christian faith, reading the Bible); providing faith forming experiences at church—learning, worship, service, and more; and connecting with families at home through digital media and methods.

Denise Utter is a freelance consultant, writer and a speaker and has been coaching with Vibrant Faith since 2018. She has worked in ministry and education for 30 years. Denise believes her work in parish and diocesan ministries informs her work today. She loves to inspire parish and diocesan leaders to reimagine faith formation, put families at the center of faith, and provide innovative approaches to faith formation and invites leaders to view the formation of parents from the perspective of calling. Denise has a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union.

Teacher: Sister Janet Schaeffler, OP

The Maturing and Older Adults Faith Formation MasterClass explores the life tasks, interests and gifts of maturing adults (55-75 years) and older adults (75+ years). If we don’t listen to the world’s stereotypes, myths and jokes about getting older, life for those in their eldering years is filled with possibilities, growth and depth, particularly in the things that matter. This MasterClass will focus on understanding the characteristics and needs of these two stages of adulthood, and presenting practical ideas and possible strategies for adult faith formation for these graced seasons of adult life

Sister Janet Schaeffler is an Adrian Dominican Sister who has worked in parish and diocesan ministry in faith formation. She is currently ministering as an adult faith formation consultant and presenter. The author of hundreds of articles and several publications in catechetical and parish ministry, her articles can be found in Today’s Parish and Religion Teacher’s Journal as well as several other parish ministerial publications. She teaches online courses through Boston College and the University of Dayton. One of her most recent books is Deepening Faith: Adult Faith Formation in the Parish (Liturgical Press, 2016). Janet created and publishes GEMS – a monthly newsletter flowing from an ongoing international adult faith formation best practices study (www.janetschaeffler.com).

The Parents as Faith Formers MasterClass is designed around the central role of parents (and grandparents) in forming faith in children, teens, and young adults. Parents are the most significant influence on the religious and spiritual outcomes of young people. The MasterClass presents approaches and strategies for how churches can encourage parents to grow in faith and become faith formers; equip parents to incorporate faith practices into family life at home; and engage parents in learning the skills and approaches for become more effective parents.

The Pathways to Faith Growth and Discipleship MasterClass guides you in learning how to personalize faith formation by creating pathways of discipleship and faith growth to help individuals and families discern their religious needs and interests, and chart their future faith growth. The course equips you with the skills to design pathways tools for families and all ages, and provides a variety of examples of churches using pathways to personalize faith formation around the religious and spiritual journeys of their people.

Previously she served as the Pastor of Lifelong Faith Formation for Central United Methodist Church in Waterford, MI. She earned a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. Her passion lies in the areas of children’s ministry, literacy awareness, discipleship pathways, and walking with people on their spiritual journey. Kathy has been involved with local school partnerships for over six years.

The Developing Playlists MasterClass guides you in developing playlists of curated content and experiences (activities, videos, podcasts, articles) for families and age groups that provide a way to bring faith formation to people in multiple settings – self-directed, mentored, at home, in small groups. The MasterClass equips you to use digital methods and platforms to engage people in using the playlists you create. Playlists are an essential tool for personalizing faith formation, for providing online faith formation, and for reaching people in their daily lives with faith forming experiences. (This MasterClass is a great follow-up to the Pathways to Faith Growth and Discipleship MasterClass.)

The Faith Formation in a Digital Age MasterClass presents the opportunities for using digital approaches in faith formation by exploring models and methods of digital and hybrid (virtual and physical) faith formation and experiencing digital tools and media to use in faith forming experiences and activities. The MasterClass provides an overview of digital platforms and tools (website, social media, video, and audio creation tools) to use in your church; and engages you in applying the methods and tools to faith formation in your church.

Rev. Kyle Oliver is an Episcopal priest and a doctoral student in Communications, Media, and Learning Technologies Design at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a Research Associate and Adjunct Instructor at Virginia Theological Seminary and a Fellow of the Episcopal Church Foundation. His teaching and research focuses on how digital media tools and spaces are changing ministry leadership and faith practices. He uses media and technology to improve learning and build community in churches, seminaries, and other communities.

The Effective Leadership MasterClass helps you to reimagine what effective leadership looks like in a rapidly changing world and church. The course presents an understanding of adaptive leadership and how it applies to leadership in the church and faith formation. The course equips you with the practices, skills, and tools to become an effective and adaptive leader in today’s church; and guides you in creating a personal leadership plan to apply the practices, skills, and tools in your ministry setting.

Rev. Dr. Von Clemans is a retired PC(USA) pastor/educator who most recently served 18 years as associate pastor in adult faith formation ministries at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. He currently serves as an instructor in the Vibrant Faith Institute and as a congregational coach for Creating a Culture of Calling, a Lilly Endowment funded initiative by Vibrant Faith Ministries. His recent doctoral studies focused on educational ministry and technology. His passion is helping congregations, educators, and pastors strengthen adult education/faith formation ministries and in helping them make appropriate use of technology in enhancing ministry.
