Today I got a notification in my email about a new post to the social-media site NextDoor, simply titled “Spider.” How can you not open that? So I did. It was a woman posting a photo of a scary-looking spider outside her home, with a note asking if anyone knew what kind of spider it was. Within a few posts, random neighbors were already at each others’ throats over the place of spiders in the world… Why do these online conversations so quickly and easily devolve into name-calling, anger, and enemy-making?
